What do you do when God isn’t funny

-Sarah the wife of Abraham in genesis 21v6 said this just after a blessing from God. –

I want to reflect on the unfairness or what it would seem, this might be a little heavy just after Christmas but nonetheless life goes on.

Notice now then, two sisters who are from the same parents raised in the same household, both are married to equally good men,one has 4 children and just finished telling her sister that she is pregnant again, and her sister has mixed feelings about being happy for her sibling over her own sadness seeing as she has been on IVF treatments for the past 10 yrs and nothing has come of it…she is in fact hurting here and it’s no laughing matter.

Isn’t it funny though how the richer keep getting richer and the fat fatter and the dumb ones well you guessed it.

I have always believed every single thing happens for a reason; a cause and effect kind of thing and I just can’t accept the “things just happen” stance,my brain just can’t accept that.
This led me to a situations where things would happen I couldn’t quite explain with the cause and effect theory for as a man I too have done things which I couldn’t explain why I did them I just “did them”.Some might say that is in fact being human.

As a great apostle once observed:
“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.”

So then I conclude that “something” made me do it and it wasn’t just my insanity but there was a cause for the decision I “chose” to take that lead to that particular effect. This then means that nothing “just happens” there is a reason behind the madness.

Now I hope you are still with me up to this point,I don’t wanna lose you just yet..there is a point to all this.

If I am then created in his image then this should at least reflect that if a lesser being such as myself has been given a measure of intelligence to discern subjects like these, then my Almighty Lord God the creator of heavens and earth he who knows all has already seen this, figured it out and knows the reasons why things are happening this way.
I cannot come upon him and be calous and ask childish questions in strife, oh no! that would be foolishness and I know better than that.

But nonetheless a part of me still finds this situation not funny, I am hurting here and what I seek is wisdom and revelation, to, at least understand why what is happening is happening and in this fashion. What purpose does it serve for a man who has so much already to be given more while those that have so little continue to remain in such a needy state if not worse.

It is not that I don’t trust him and in him or that I have lost my faith oh no,I am still here for stronger is he that is in me that he that is in the world and for that very reason something inside me is so strong, I am still standing ……(just).

For my faith isn’t dead and I can show you my works that are a corresponding action to such faith I practice, after all I have been taking the injections, kept the marriage counselling appointments, have been sending out the CV like crazy, been talking to this teenage child of mine that’s acting a fool, praying for this wife to stop hitting me,and for that husband to get it together ……..I have tried it all,and yet the drunk gets away with that hit and run,and the crooked keep filling those pockets, what am I missing here oh Lord?!

I am hurting here.

I remember that

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

And the word continues

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

This indicates to me not to think myself smarter than he who gave me wisdom. So I use that very wisdom to act in intelligence by choosing to believe his promise, follow the instructions and simply WALK BY FAITHand not trust what the circumstances look like.

But I am hurting here oh Lord.

God has made me laugh and all that hear will laugh with me.

so it is not strange for him to make me laugh too.

So I then wonder:-

What do you do when God’s isn’t funny?

  1. Yeah, God is very often not funny. I shout angry words at Him and tell Him I don’t like His plan. The The Holy Spirit reminds me of Jeremiah 29:11 and, soon enough, I begin to thank Him.

  2. When God isn’t funny – it’s sometimes an opportunity to see how funny we are. We want what we want. How much of our hurt is self-inflicted by wanting something other people have? We see what other people have (and they don’t believe in God, and are not even very nice) and lament that we don’t have it (and are we people of faith and haven’t we been good and patient?) No matter how much we persevere in faith and prayer and hope, there are some things that just won’t happen for us, some things (even people) we just will not have. What’s the Rolling Stones song? “You can’t always get what you want, but, if you try, you just might find, you get what you need.” These aren’t just words to me. For, I’ve never walked, I’ve never been kissed, I’ve never lived on my own – and I will never walk, I will never live on my own, I will never be married, I will never have children. I’m not giving up on the power of God to work miracles. I’m understanding that not everybody’s life looks the same. I have an incurable genetic defect that makes me severely physically disabled – and, yet, I love life. I, too, am hurting here (actually literally at this moment) AND I am glad to be alive. Next time there is a tragedy, next time you’re miserably sad, next time you want an easier life, maybe do what I do – look at a crucifix. God was hurting, too. He feels every pain that you do. There is no real love if one isn’t willing to give – even to give to the point of hurting. Hurting bad. And, like I said, I love life. When God isn’t funny, let’s remember how laughable it is for us to put some of our unfulfilled desires before Christ on the Cross, as if He doesn’t understand. Practical advice: there’s always someone worse off than we are (there are definitely people worse off than I am) – go and help them, it will make you feel better. (And I’m sorry this was so long! God bless you!)

    • Thank you very much for your comment it is very refreshing to have pure sheer honesty like that.
I feel you your words of bravery is an example for others to follow. It is tremendous that after all that you are going through, you still have a positive outlook on life. You should be proud.

If you have a chance to read through most of my writing I try to ask and enquire and suppose add my perspective on it and gain insight and its people such as yourself that provide, testimonies, warnings, rebuke, strengthening words and like in your case inspiration not to just to me but to me but others as well. Often the questions I put forward are those that I have asked myself at one point and I know for sure others have them too (if we are being honest).

One thing is for sure there are people worse off.But have you ever noticed everyone always thin their problem/situation the worst?some people would loose eye shadow and “my life is over” while others will be loosing their home, health,a loved one.
So although it may appear trivial to others it is of genuine hurt to them at that time and they too seek answers and understanding just like the next person and often the ” its happened just get on with it approach” just doesn’t cut it.

      If I may;
someone who has got divorced will be in pain and confusion. For me to say I understand what there are going through not having been divorced myself would be an understatement, especially to someone who has lost something they had before as opposed to a someone who just wants “unfulfilled desires”.

In our societies these days there are too many cry babies sure but there are also those that are confused and in pain.

Thanks again and that wasn’t long at all.
I loved every second reading that.

      • I’m relieved that you’re glad for my response. Phew! Seriously, it isn’t easy being honest, is it? It isn’t easy to be vulnerable and to show our wounds. And we all have wounds – I would never, never judge the “validity” of another person’s pain. People who I believe are worse off than I am are people who seem to have everything: wealth, health, talent, fame – but are lacking real love. And I agree wholeheartedly with you: it’s wrong and even a little cruel to tell someone who is hurting that that’s life and they need to just get over it. We want to help people who are hurting. I want to say the right words to comfort and soothe you. But, as one of my friends once taught me about the deep suffering in her life, “There are some wounds that only divine love can heal.” And, so, I pray for miracles and for the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and courage and counsel. Miracles come in many forms…
I’m looking forward to exploring your blog in the new year!

      • As I am looking forward to exploring yours.

Most of my posts however are not self centred and all about me.I just write about things that:-

        i) confuse me
        ii) answers I seek
iii)stuff I find interesting getting other people’s persepective.

And I do get my answers from people like you,so here is to a great victorious 2014 to you.

  3. The Scriptures talk about chance Limbiley……..

Ecclesiastes 9:11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. Luke 10:31 & 1 Samuel 6:9

it is not what happens to us that is important but how we react to it and resolve it and to try to do so in the flesh is pointless, our flesh or sinful nature, needs to be put to death that is what Paul was referring to in Romans 7 that you shared about and in Romans 8 and other Scriptures he tells us how we do this. Also to say we cannot know God’s good thoughts for us, is contradicting the Scriptures…..

1 Corinthians 2:9-16 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that Love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spiritual things with Spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are Spiritually discerned. But he that is Spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the Mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him? but we have the Mind of Christ.

We can freely go to God as a child goes to their Parents Limbiley and ask what we need to without fear He will ignore us or be angry with us and we listen with our heart not our head. Seek, Ask and knock.

Isaiah 55:3 Incline your ear and come unto me: hear and your soul shall live.

    • Let me cralify,

The comment about Paul: was to serve a point that nothing even our sins just happens there is always a cause for things.hence I wondered why God at times will bless others abundantly and not others when when we all are under the same promise. John 10:10

I do not doubt God plans and good intentions towards my life as he says rightly I know the plan I have for you,a plan to give you hope and a good future.

I just find it confunsing and heratbreaking at times when all I want is a little something (for good) and it makes it’s way not to someone less diversing but rather someone who doesn’t need it let alone appreciate it.

And I have been asking for revelation and wisdom to find out why this is so,listening with my heart I am doing, guess it’s too broken,I have also asked for healing for it.
It just seems I have too much going on.

      • In referring to Romans7 “I do not understand what I do… Paul is battling with his flesh which we must put to death, he calls himself a wretched man but then tells us it is Jesus who rescues him, He has set us free from the slavery of sin, No Temptation will be greater than we can bear.

God’s discipline and chastisement is not what some think it is, God tells us He does not willingly afflict us (see below) we reap what we sow good and bad , others who walk in their sinful flesh hurt us, we live in a fallen world and Satan puts us to the test, as he did job, Jesus, Paul, Peter etc, but God promises to be with us through it all…..

Isaiah 43:1-3 – Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.”

Lamentations 3: 33 For God doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

We are not to store up riches for ourselves Limbiley on earth God provides what we need, we are to store them up in Heaven by choosing to do good through the empowering of The Holy Spirit, I will leave a link for you below to save space. We are also not to envy what others have , the things of earth are fleeting our rewards will be Heavenly too but we can know God’s Peace and Joy and have His Hope and rest in this life.

        Money – http://freedomborn.wordpress.com/2011/11/18/money-money-money/

Time on earth is like a Nanosecond in Eternity, and it is not our home, although each minute on earth when we are prepared and equipped vessels, is precious and needed for doing God’s works that He has planned in advance for us to do and He knows if we will do them before we are conceived.

Christian Love from us both – Anne.

  4. although I know that when you are hurting and God is not laughing and there is no humor, scriptures being given to you sometimes don’t help at all. Yes, you know the scriptures, you know God is in control. Your heart is hurting and you want it fixed. For this, I am so very sorry my friend. We were told some 38 years ago that there was less than a 30% chance that I would ever get pregnant. Soon after that we received a word from the Lord saying that my womb would be opened before we left Japan (where we were living at the time). We bounced that around and almost extended our stay there giving the Lord more of an opportunity for fullfil His word. God knows the deepest groanings of your heart. He hears the inaudible cries of your being, He knows. He also sees you giving Him glory and He sees your faith. Not the outward frustration that others see and you see, but, He sees the inner workings of your heart. He has perfection waiting for you. Here is a scripture from Genesis 18:14 from the amplified Bible,” Is anything too hard or too wonderful [a]for the Lord? At the appointed time, when the season [for her delivery] comes around, I will return to you and Sarah shall have borne a son”
And, here is the scripture we wrote in our birth announcements for our firstborn, who was three months old when we left Japan, this is taken from the amplified Bible also,
Luke 1:37, “For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment.”
Know that I will continue to pray for you and your wife. Sorry for the long response

  5. As you have rightly said we do not know all the ways of the Lord, but he has warned those that sin will one day pay the price of that sin, either in this life or in the life to come. I love this scripture 1 Corinthians 13:11-12 one day i shall be known by what i have done.

I am new here but i have needs 🙂 if you are adding scripture can you add a reference please?

    • I will remember that for next time,it’s just usually I just start dishing out what comes to mind can’t remember the exact verse and chapter and going back and forth for reference makes me lose my focus, writing mojo am usually like in a trance when I write these things,it’s all from the heart.

      But I will try.

  6. At first she laughed at God’s prediction, in doubt, outrageously assessing His prognostication. Later, she is faced with the fact that she is still standing, not struck down for unbelief, she laughs now, struck instead by her past foolish incredulity, now with nervous relief.
In our case, when God isn’t funny, we know we are about to be taken into His confidence. What an amazing consideration has been bestowed (this) upon us, that He would share His Solemnity with me, a mere mortal, imagine what doors will open with this bestowal.
    Peace out.MAO

    • Thank you for that reminder and a bit of background into how God will make us laugh and reminding us of the rewards and as you have very well put “an amazing consideration” never saw that before.

  7. Ponder on this gem. Count it all joy.
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

  8. For everything there is a time and a place. They are no different – these tears – this laughter. A fool not only rushes in where others … a fool also laughs when others …
